The Meuse Valley has some spectacular  biking roads, through open countryside or the peaceful wooded areas of the Argonne Forest and the Ardennes. The history of World War One is all around you with many Monuments, Memorials, Museums, Destroyed Villages and Fortress towns to visit.

Dun-Sur-Meuse is situated between the ancient citadel town of Stenay, now famous for its European Beer Museum, and the historic city of Verdun. On the hill overlooking the town stands an 11th century fortified church, built on the site of a Roman Fortress.

Verdun a fortress since Roman times and the site of the longest battle of World War One, around which hinged the whole outcome of the war. It is now The Peace Capital of the World. Visit its many forts, battlefields, and underground citadel. You cannot help but be moved by a visit to The Ossuary which contains the remains of over 130,000 unknown soldiers .The Sacred Way is the only road in France without a number and was the last road to remain in French hands during the Battle Of Verdun, ensuring supplies for the besieged city. Each kilometre is marked with a bronzed helmet.

Montemdy Citadel was a primary fortress of the Maginot line in World War Two. It is possible to explore the Ramparts and underground tunnels of this ancient walled Citadel.

The American Army played a huge part in the recent history of Dun sur Meuse. The bridge by our house commemorates their crossing of the Meuse river during WW1 and the establishment of the first bridgehead on the eastern bank Many battles took place in this area and the largest American Cemetery outside of the USA is just ten kilometres away. It is a beautiful park and a very tranquil location for over 14 thousand American Soldiers. The whole area has many monuments and memorials commemorating The Great War and holds much for anyone interested in history.

Further afield Belgium and Luxemburg are an easy day trip away and a shopping trip here can pay for itself. The Nurburg ring is 150 miles away. We are well placed for travelling on to southern Germany, Black Forest, Bavaria , Switzerland and Italy.
